Information and Resources for Current Students and Families

Group workshop and concert dates

Please let me know ASAP if you cannot make a workshop or a concert.

I highly encourage all students to attend group workshops as this is when we apply the skills we are learning in private lessons, have fun and learn to make music together!

The sooner I know a student will be absent, the more efficiently and successfully I can plan a great event, hire an accompanist/workshop teacher, or rent or reserve teaching space.

Payment is for the semester and can be paid in 4 monthly payments due at the start of the

month.

Lessons are $40 for 30 minute lessons, and $55 for 45 minute lessons

Tuition includes lessons,  one makeup lesson, group classes and a $35 fee for the final concert,

which pays for facility rental and a backing musician.

A practice chart booklet can be requested once a year; replacements cost $5.00.

Checks should be made out to Ellery Klein. I also take cash or Venmo: @Ellery-Klein-1

Absences/Swaps/Makeups

Let me know in writing via email or text if you know in advance you are not coming.

*For same day cancellations or communication, send a text message.

• I have reserved my time specifically for your student. Semester tuition includes one

free lesson which counts as a makeup for a sick day or missed lesson. There are no

other guaranteed makeups, except one snow day per semester. This will be made up on

school vacation weekends. Let me know ASAP if you will be away these dates, and we

can make other arrangements.

• If a religious holiday is the reason you must miss, notify me >2 wks in advance and we

will arrange a makeup. If I, the teacher, need to cancel lessons for reasons of illness or

emergency, I will also schedule a makeup for this.

• Swap Lessons: If a conflict arises, you may contact other students to seek a swap or

offer your open slot. (If you have a 45 minute lesson and switch for a 30 minute lesson,

the schedule cannot be altered.)

Please notify me after the switch has been decided and cc all parties on the email so I

know that everyone is on the same page.

Discontinuing Lessons

3 weeks notice is required if you decide not to continue lessons for any reason. If you have

paid by semester, the remainder will be refunded, minus the required 3 weeks' notice.

Parking/ Arrival

Park on the opposite side Fells Ave & use caution crossing the street. Enter through Fells Ave entrance.

Parking can also be found on Fells Avenue Terrace or the Fellsway. Do not park on Hillsboro.

Aim to arrive no more than 5 minutes early.

Please come in, prepare your instrument, and quietly take a seat on the couch while the previous lesson finishes up.

Resources for parents & STudents

Where to Buy/Rent a Violin and the Accessories

Johnson String & Carriage House Violins

New England's premier violin shop in Newton, MA for rentals, sales, supplies and accessories.

Ask for Julie Metcalf, my band-mate and store manager, and tell her I sent you!

Acoustic Strings of New England

Run out of Keene, NH, but with a shop in Somerville's Armory for the Arts, Acoustic is my second choice for violin rentals. Slightly cheaper and much closer than Johnson's, and very friendly, if a little harder to get a hold of.

Shar Music

Big online strings shop- they are actually staffed by people that know and love all things violin, so please support them over Amazon! They will ship strings for free. They also have a good selection of cheaper carbon fiber bows.

Southwest Strings

Another large online strings shop, like Shar.

FiddleQuest

My main curriculum for most students is the online resource www.fiddlequest.com.

I work through Level 5 and then move to a more individualised curriculum including many tunes commonly played in the Boston Irish, Scottish, Old Time and Contradance scenes.

I also use books from the curriculum list to the right.
